about

1
Sampling C64 tunes, some PC games (Mean Streets?) and anything I can think of, this has great vocals by Carys, and is quite a favourite.

2
With some Seinfeld samples and the classic anime quote "Those 3 KLFs went down in just seconds", this is a favourite, because of Carys's beautiful vocals.

3
This was based on a song, though I can't reveal which it is. I think it's okay as an instrumental, but not much fun to listen to.

4
For this, I wanted to make a French house-sounding song, based on Benjamin Diamond, Bob Sinclar, Daft Punk, and Air. I actually sang the vocals with a French accent! I was disappointed that people don't "get" it. But hey, at least it's a fun listen. I blanked out the swearing in this mix, but it was hardly offensive.

5
I admit this was based on some Vince Clarke samples from his CD "Lucky B***ard". The song was originally about being a 'Superclone', but I toned it down to be about a small local recording studio.

6
Using a cheap Yamaha PSR synth, I recorded in an ad lib beat/melody, then added loads of Xpander sounds. Carys recorded some vocals which have the classic line "Get on the dancefloor, you'll be a millionaire". To be truthful, this wasn't serious: I just wanted to make fun of dance floor songs which say "Get on the dancefloor and X'.

7
This is another Xpander classic. Basically, every synth or beat is each on a Xpander voice. Quite interesting. Adding some truly insane Carys lyrics was key, BUT as an extra fun thing, the recordings of the vocals sounded very hissy and white noise-y, so I had to use a noise removal filter in Cooledit. What happened is, now it sounds like she's singing through a vocoder - which was not the intent. My favourite line: "Pay my income tax".

8
Not sure where this one came from, but it's a nice little instrumental.

9
Comes after 54 Aqoc 2. Not much to say other than described in that track. This was considered by the Bannofee record label to be the best song in the album, and remix-worthy. Of course, this doesn't sound as good as the remixes, but it holds its own.

10
This was the 2nd of a track from which comes Gil 2014. This actually came first in the recording, and Gil 2nd. Notably, I cut this in 2, and reversed the order. The lyrics by Carys are a classic in the making, and this is the jewel in the SOM crown.

11
My old friend Graham and I put together this piece, before he became Stress Level. We got some samples from records and a few beats (with the crazy 'Granular' synth) and made this. Graham called it 'a joke' once, but it really is an original track with some nice sounds.

12
Sampled Peter Gabriel's Steam AND Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing. Was originally called Sexual Stealing, but that seemed too risque. I put Carys on some crazy lyrics about stealing a band's master tape, and this crazy piece was complete!

13
I had a strange dream with this melody. I wrote some paranoid lyrics and it sounds good.

14
Not much to say here. Just more Xpander goodness.

15
In 2003, I read a book about a guy entering Eurovision. Me & some Uni friend(s) wanted to buy an island, so we made this song. It's written by Ben, Rosie and I. We were going to record it in Jason Hobman's studio (where he worked), but Ben was ill and so we missed the window. The song remained solely on a C90 tape, and in 2014 or so, I recorded all the guitar from the tapes, did a backing, and then got Carys to sing the lyrics. I've been told it was unlikely to get selected for Eurovision (or the UK competition), but I think it's a nice song.

16
I feel guilty about re-mixing the song I released on Mouthmoth in 2001 or thereabouts. Basically, I remixed it so it was about Christmas, for my Xmas No.1. It's in a way overproduced, but it sounds good.

17
In the 90's a few IDM artists came out with a 'theme'. Like Squarepusher's theme. I thought of doing this for SOM. The track was due to be released on 500 vinyl 7" records, but I got pipped to the post by the Dudley Corporation.

18
This was a paranoid rant about GP Surgeries. There was a more complete version, but Cubase crashed and I lost that. This - previously unreleased - is the last mixdown I did. I think it's one of my best-realised tracks. It was based on Fluxorgy's samples (Jason Hobman).

19
This song was based on the C64 tune 'Complications' by Danko. I asked permission to cover it, but he declined. Thus, I changed the basic theme. Now I realise it was a cover, so he had no rights to not have it covered. So I put it here in its original incarnation. It was previously released on Mouthmoth in 2001.

20
Slightly cheekily, I sampled Donald Fagen's 1982 digitally-mastered classic IGY, and with Xpander sounds, made it an instant classic. Never mind the sample rights here!

21
'What is Life when you're alone?'

This track is about being lonely. It's a song but I haven't recorded the lyrics (with Carys) quite yet. Just love that funky beat!
